Today we wore our hats to school to recognize the importance of mental health in our lives.
A big part of our mental health is tied to the language we use to talk about ourselves. In Kindergarten, we have been intentionally adding the word "YET" to our statements this year when we struggle with tasks at school. For example, "Ugh, I can't do this.... YET", "I don't know this letter... YET", "I don't know how to count that many... YET", and "I don't know how to read... YET". This has really helped students to have a positive mindset about their learning and consciously acknowledge that they are constantly learning new things every single day.
To expand on this, we watched this video that clearly explains the difference between a GROWTH mindset and a FIXED mindset. Students found it easy to understand because we have been learning a lot about seeds and nourishing our pea plants in the classroom in order for them to grow.
After watching this video, we did a sorting activity where students needed to listen to phrases and sort them into GROWTH or FIXED mindset groups.
We also took the time to reflect on a time this year where we really struggled with something. Students drew a picture to represent how they overcame this hurdle and embraced a GROWTH mindset.
