Making Groups:
Last week, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Students solved a series of questions using manipulatives in order to show their understanding of quantity and making groups. Students needed to count the correct number of manipulatives before they could sort them into equal groups.
Some example questions are:
- There were 6 apples. How many apples would the caterpillar and the butterfly each get? (Answer: 3)
- There are 7 plums. How many plums would the caterpillar and the butterfly each get? (Answer: they would each get three, and then most students said they would cut the last plum in half so each one got the same amount)
- There are 10 apples. How many apples would the caterpillar and the butterfly each get? (Answer: 5)
- There are 9 apples. How many apples would the caterpillar, butterfly and ladybug each get? (Answer: 3)
This week, we read The Very Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. We are looking at the quantity and the amount all together in our math problems this week.
Students were tasked with drawing ladybugs, rolling a die and putting the correct number of stickers on each side of the lady bug. Some students counted how many stickers in total they had on their ladybug and recorded their answer. Other students were able to "grab onto the biggest number" and then count on. For example, if I had 6 spots on one side and 5 spots on the other, the student would count on by saying "grab onto 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 - there are 11 spots altogether".
