Good afternoon!

Thank you so much to those of you who have completed the following tasks:

If you haven't already done these tasks, please do so by the end of this week.

We have started learning about our five senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching.

Five Senses Song
Five senses, five senses (hold up 5 fingers)
We need them, we need them
Seeing, hearing, smelling, (point to eyes, ears, nose)
Seeing, hearing, smelling, (point to eyes, ears, nose)
Tasting and touching (point to mouth and arm)
Tasting and touching (point to mouth and arm)

We are going to be talking about how we can use our five senses to make sense of the world around us. Here are some stories you can read with your child at home to reinforce these concepts.

Feel free to also print off these anchor charts to help facilitate conversations at home when you are using the five senses!

We have also started learning how to represent numbers using a TEN FRAME!

What is a Ten Frame? Great question! A ten frame is a rectangle, separated into two rows with 10 equal spaces. In class, we talked about how the ten frame looks like a window and each window space is a spot we can look through to see something. If there is nothing there in the "window", we are not able to count it!

Here is what a ten frame looks like:

Why use 10 Frames you ask?? Because they help us subitize! Subitizing is being able to recognize how many of something there is without counting each item individually. Similarly to recognizing numbers 4 or 6 when you roll dice.

When items are placed into a 10 Frame, they are lined up neatly and easier to recognize in terms of quantity. On a 10 Frame, we always start on the top row, and go left to right. In Kindergarten, we are working on being able to subitize quantities of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Today, we used Playdoh and our Ten Frame Workmats to represent many different numbers!

If you would like to practice with 10 frames at home, you can follow this link: 10 Frame Game

Have a wonderful evening!
