Thursday Update

 Reminders:

  • No School tomorrow, Friday November 20
  • Picture Re-takes on Wednesday November 25
  • Return library books on Wednesday!
Good afternoon,

Hope you are all staying warm during this chilly weather! The kids are getting more and more excited that it is closer to winter.

This week, we learned about the Letters W and X. These letters use only straight, long lines and are trickier because there are angles involved!

Library Update

We will be doing book exchange every WEDNESDAY (not Tuesday - as previously mentioned). Your child is able to keep their books at home until Wednesday so they can read it a few times with you.

One way you can encourage your child to read independently is to tell a story using only the pictures in the book! This is a great way for beginning readers to attend to details within a storybook and use their imagination.

Here is an example of how you can use photos to infer what is going to happen in a story:

During Math, we looked at one of the correct ways to use a 10 Frame!

We looked at how words are put into order in a book. We discovered that they go left to right, and then we go to the next line of text and read left to right again!

We discussed how when we are using a ten frame, it helps our brain to go left to right as well!

Look at how we represented the number 7! This is one of the correct ways to represent the number 7 using a 10 frame! We started on the left hand side of the top row and put 5 dots, and then went down to the second row on the left hand side and put two dots.

We talked about how sometimes our brain can get confused when we read the words in the wrong order and they don't make sense.

Here is an example of what it could look like.

The words are in the wrong order and do not make sense anymore. This confusion can be the same with the dots starting on the left hand side on the top and then the right hand side on the bottom.

Did you know you can make your own ten frame at home using an egg carton? You can use materials around the house to represent different numbers!

For example: pompoms, macaroni noodles, apples, Legos and Playdoh.

Have a wonderful evening!
