Good evening Kindergarten Families!

We have been learning more about patterns this week.

We have been using this song to help us remember that a pattern is something that repeats itself.

(Sing to the tune of Wheels on the Bus)

A pattern is something that repeats itself, repeats itself, repeats itself.
A pattern is something that repeats itself, over and over again.

We learned about AB, ABC, ABCD, AAB and AABB patterns.

For example, an AB pattern is a pattern with two attributes that repeat. This could be a triangle, square, triangle, square... repeating pattern. It could also be blue, yellow, blue, yellow, blue, yellow... repeating pattern.

The students have been working on their own Pattern Books. These will be coming home next week!

What kind of patterns can you make using objects around the house?! Feel free to share with me by sending me a picture.

We have finished up with our "Frog Jump Letters" which are letters that all start at the top left corner with a big line on the left. When the first line is on the left, the next part is on the "right" side. This prevents reversals, while teaching good stroke habits. The letters we have done so far include: F, E, D, P, B, R, N and M.

Some activities you could do at home to reinforce the formation of these letters include:

  • Making Playdoh letters
  • Use your finger to write in shaving cream
  • Paint the letters
  • Make letters out of Lego
  • Pack the snow to make letters
  • Write letters in lemon juice on paper with a cotton swab
We also read The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano.

We brainstormed different shapes that pumpkins could be, as well as different colors. Students drew their own pumpkins. There was quite a variety of different pumpkins!! Some students even wrote down names for their pumpkins!
