3-D Shapes

 Reminders:

  • Return library books every Wednesday!
  • AM Kindergarten attends Friday April 16

Good afternoon,

We have started learning about 3-D shapes in our environment!

In the beginning, students often will call spheres "circles" and cubes "squares" but they learn the correct names very quickly. I introduced the vocabulary of base, point, edge, and face to the students but they are not required to memorize these terms for each shape. The purpose is to give students the language needed to describe the different attributes of the shapes!

Students went on a scavenger hunt in the classroom to find different examples of 3-D shapes! We had a lot of really great discussions around whether or not an object was a sphere or cylinder, a cube or rectangular prism and started applying the new language we had learned by comparing faces, edges, sides and points.

Looking at the groupings we made today,
  • Can you find any shapes that do not belong in each picture?
  • Can you identify which shape each picture represents?
