Learning Update

Reminders:

  • Send ONE valentines card to school by Monday February 8th for our Kindness wall (see previous blog post or scroll to the bottom of this post)
  • PM Kindergarten attends school this Friday February 5th
  • No School Thursday February 11 and Friday 12 due to Teachers Convention
  • No School Monday February 15 due to Family Day

We have been learning more about circles, squares and triangles! We have been working on comparing these shapes to make sure we understand the similarities and differences!

We started playing a game called "Mystery Shapes". Mrs. Kawohl hides two or three shapes in a bucket and the students receive clues to see if they can figure out what the shapes are!

Here is an example of two clues that were given to the class: There are two shapes in my bucket. The total number of sides is 6. What shapes could be in my bucket?

Here is one of the brainstorm sessions we have done:

  1. Triangle and circle = 3 sides
  2. Square and circle = 4 sides
  3. Circle and triangle = 3 sides (we noticed the order of the shapes doesn't change the number of sides)
  4. Square and hexagon = 10 sides
  5. Two hexagons = 12 sides
  6. Hexagon and circle = 6 sides (we really thought this was the answer, but then Mrs. Kawohl showed us one of the shapes in the bucket and it was a TRIANGLE!... back to the drawing board!)
  7. Triangle and diamond = 7 sides
  8. Two triangles = 6 sides (FINALLY!!)

Can you figure out a way to do "Mystery Shapes" at home in your kitchen? Or with objects found in nature?

Important Notice Regarding Valentines Day:

This year, our school has decided not to have students exchange valentines in order to follow COVID-19 protocols. Instead of exchanging valentines, students are invited to make ONE card at home to act as a valentine for the classroom community. The cards will be collected by Mrs. Kawohl on Monday February 8th. The cards will be read aloud to the class on Wednesday February 10th and then put on a visible kindness wall for everyone to see.

Some ideas for your card:

  • What you love about our class
  • What our class does on a daily basis to "fill your bucket"
  • Your favorite thing about being in the classroom
Thank you for your understanding!
