Thank you everyone for taking the time to meet with me to discuss your child's learning.
PM Kindergarten: Just a reminder that starting on Monday September 28th, doors will be opening at 11:43. We do not need to worry about physically distancing students at entry time because we are the only ones entering the door at this time in the day.
Next week, we will be learning about Orange Shirt Day. We will be talking abut how Phyllis Webstad had her orange shirt taken away when she went to residential school and how this made her feel. We will be reading some kid friendly stories about what some people experienced at residential schools, and talking about how we can make sure every child matters. Your child will need to wear an orange shirt to school on Wednesday September 30th.
Here is a video explaining Orange Shirt Day if you'd like to discuss with your child over the weekend:
We will be learning two more letters next week, letters P and B. We will also continue working on understanding how to create patterns and represent them concretely (using blocks), pictorally (using pictures) and symbolically (using letters/numbers). Additionally, students will get a chance to explore with water color paints!
A common question from the conferences over the last two days was, "How can I help my child at home so that they are ready for Grade 1?" I will be posting links and resources throughout the school year that you are welcome to incorporate into your daily routines at home if you are interested.
Here are a few things you can be doing regularly:
- Checking the Blog for learning updates to see what we are doing in school
- Reviewing ABC's - letter recognition and sound recognition
- Counting 0 - 10
- Recognizing signs in your community (Stop Signs, Yield Sign, Traffic lights, etc...)
- Reading out loud to your child every day
Ask Your Child:
1. What is the new letter they learned this week? What sound does it make? Can they remember any words that start with the letter P?
2. What is a pattern? (Something that repeats itself) How do you create a pattern? (Using shapes, colors, sizes, thickness)
3. Can you show me a pattern?
