Measuring Our Names

  Reminders:

  • All library books are due back ASAP!
  • PM Kindergarten attends Friday June 18. We will be going on an outdoor walk so please dress accordingly.
  • Report Cards available online on Friday June 25.
We have been working on following multi-step instructions for Math tasks to prepare for Grade 1! The task was to determine who has the longest and the shortest name in Kindergarten!
  1. First, students had to write their name on grid paper.
  2. Then, we counted how many letters are in our name. Students had to find the number around the room to match (i.e. I have 6 letters in my last name (Kawohl) so I need to find the number 6)
  3. Next, students put their names into alphabetical order!
  4. Last, students combined the groups and determined who had the longest and the shortest name. We also discussed similarities and differences between each class, and each group of names.

Ask your child:
  • Who has the longest name in your class? In Kindergarten?
  • Who has the shortest name in your class? In Kindergarten?
  • How many letters are in your name?
We have also  been continuing our exploration with measuring objects using snap cubes. Students have been counting one-to-one (and some are even subitizing) the total amount of cubes each object is. Then, they have been determining which object is the tallest/smallest and longest/shortest.

Warm and Cool Colors

 Reminders:

  • All library books are due back by Wednesday June 16th.
  • No School for AM or PM Kindergarten on Friday June 11.
  • Report Cards available online on Friday June 25.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have been noticing different colours in our picture books and there were many queries into why the colours were very bright and how they look so good.

We decided to learn about warm and cool colours and how we can use them to complement each other.

We looked at the colour wheel and then decided we want to experiment with a sky and ground to see how we could make a bright, bold and colourful picture!

We also used water colour paints and our complementary colours to paint guided drawings we did of monarch butterflies!

After listening to the story, The Listening Walk by Paul Showers, the morning class went on a listening walk today with our visual journals!

We drew anything we saw, heard and smelled on our listening walk!

Ask your child what kind of things they can see, sounds they hear and smells they experience the next time you are outside or in your car.

The afternoon class will be going on their listening walk on Friday June 18th. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
